The Tretyakov Gallery is one of the largest repositories of Russian fine art in Russia. It began with a brilliant collection of Russian paintings, collected by the Moscow merchant and industrialist Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov and donated to the city of Moscow in 1892. Russian Russian Art Gallery, conceived by its founder as a museum that allows "to have an idea of all Russian artists," the Tretyakov Gallery presents to visitors a unique collection of ancient Russian iconography, masterpieces of Russian fine art of the XVIII–XIX centuries, as well as the most outstanding achievements of Russian and Soviet art of the XX century. Today, the State Tretyakov Gallery is a large museum complex. Its main exhibition is located in its original place in the historical part of Moscow, in Lavrushinsky Lane. The building on Krymsky Val presents the best works of art of the XX century.
